According to Leo Vollnhofer, Kurt Rado was born in Temesvar, then in Hungary, but later ceded to Romania. His father died in 1935 and he emigrated to France, where he learned to box. He served in the French Foreign Legion in North Africa and Indochina, but was taken a prisoner-of-war by the German army in 1943. In 1945 he was handed over to the French occupation troops in Tyrol, Austria. He left the French army in 1946 and became involved in professional boxing in Austria as a trainer and boxer. He also was employed as a traveling salesman for a firm selling cleaning materials for automobile repair shops, in which he did very well.

Rado was persuaded to become a judge and referee of boxing in 1951, and went on to serve as referee in about 500 professional fights. He refereed 43 official European title bouts and two fights for world championships.

His professional record does not include fights that he had in France, or a few that he claimed to have had in Romania on visits to his home area.
