Mazie, another singer, tells them that Gloria has left to nurse her ailing mother because they cannot afford a nurse. After spotting a poster which offers $2,500 to the winner of an amateur boxing match, Bowery Boy Slip Mahoney puts a reluctant Sach Sullivan into training. Sach is such an incompetent boxer that when Raymond, a hypnotist, visits the drugstore where the boys hang out, Slip asks Raymond to teach him how to hypnotize Sach. Raymond successfully hypnotizes Sach and gives Slip a coin that will instantly put Sach back into hypnosis. The hypnotized Sach is now such an effective boxer that he attracts the attention of gamblers led by Bull Laguna. Laguna decides to enter a former welterweight champion, whose extensive plastic surgery has rendered him unrecognizable, in the contest. Using the name Billy Butterworth, the champion easily wins his fights and is soon set to face Sach in the ring. Laguna then asks Bowery Boy Gabe to suggest that people bet on Billy instead of Sach. In return, Laguna offers Gloria a job singing at his Club Shamrock. After Laguna makes a pass at Gloria, however, Gabe becomes disillusioned and now wants Sach to win the fight so that Gloria will not have to work for Laguna. Gabe refuses to tell Laguna how Slip hypnotizes Sach, but Laguna persuades him to cooperate by revealing Billy&#039;s real identity and convincing him that Sach cannot win. After sending a pickpocket to steal the coin Slip uses to hypnotize Sach, Laguna makes doubly sure of his victory by hiring &quot;Evil Eye&quot; Fagin to hex Sach. The pickpocket mistakenly steals Sach&#039;s good luck piece instead of the coin, and during the fight, Sach is torn between the powers of Slip and Evil Eye. One of the boys blinds Evil Eye with the flash of a camera, but then the pickpocket succeeds in stealing Slip&#039;s coin. While Slip frantically tries to find the coin again, Gabe accidentally reveals Billy&#039;s real identity to Gloria, who insists that he tell the judges. One of Laguna&#039;s men then shoots and wounds Gabe, but after the match ends in a double knockout, the judges disqualify Billy.
