'''Murray Gaby''', best known as a Miami, Florida, fight manager, began his boxing career as an amateur in Newark, NJ, using the alias "Marty Kaplan." He won a scholarship at the University of Hawaii. When that school dropped boxing in the 1950s, Gaby went to Idaho State University until it too eliminated boxing. So Murray headed off to the University of Miami, where he continued his education in fine art. In the 1952 University of Miami Yearbook, Gaby is listed as a standout on the school's boxing team. He had 125 amateur bouts before he turned professional in 1960.

He reportedly won 12 pro bouts in a row, but soon quit due to excessive cutting about the face. He became one of Miami's top advertising designers, a painter, and sculptor. He then formed the "Mendoza Group"--a number of well-known sportsmen who sponsored and developed promising boxers such as [[Marcel Clay]], [[Roberto Ayala]], [[Vinnie Curto]], [[James Scott]], and [[Human:17715|Lou Esa]].
