In 1947 he made the final of the [[New York Golden Gloves]] Tournament of Champions with a reported disputed decision being awarded to [[Columbus Lowman ]] at welterweight and Grimes was selected to represent New York for the [[Intercity Golden Gloves]]' championship at welterweight. He also made the semi-final of the National AAU in 1947.
