*Whitaker vs. Pestryaev was billed as a [[WBA]] welterweight elimination match. Pestryaev was ranked #1 and Whitaker was #3.
*Whitaker backed Pestryaev up against the ropes in the 11th round. When Pestryaev spun off, Whitaker ducked his head through the ropes. Once he brought it back in, Pestryaev hit him with a right. Whitaker squatted and covered up, then ducked through the ropes again. Referee James Santa said, "Get in here. What are you doing?" He then gave Whitaker an eight count. "As soon as he ducked outside the ropes, it became a knockdown since punches sent him there," Santa said later.
*Whitaker threw 690 punches and landed 225 (33 percent), while Pestryaev threw 609 and landed 108 (18 percent).
*[[HBO]] judge [[Harold Lederman]] scored the fight 115-112 for Whitaker.
*After the fight, Pestryaev's promoter, Michel Acaries, went into a rage in the ring because he said one of the judges had changed his score in the 12th round to favor Whitaker. There was a change in scoring on the card of Judge Glenn Feldman, but it was in favor of Pestryaev.
*The result of the fight was changed to a "No Decision" after Whitaker tested positive for cocaine.
*Whitaker was suspended for six months by the Mashantucket Pequot Gaming Commission, but the WBA did not recognize the suspension, asserting the positive test was invalid. The suspension was lifted by the commission after Whitaker, who proclaimed his innocence, agreed to submit to random drug testing over a six-month period. After failing one of the random tests, Whitaker entered a drug and alcohol rehabilitation center. The rehabilitation forced the cancellation of his title fight against WBA welterweight champion [[Ike Quartey]] on April 25 in Las Vegas.
