The 20-year-old champion pummeled Weston with left jabs, body shots and left-right combinations in the first three rounds, staggering him several times and buckling his knees once. In the 3rd round, a slight cut opened over Weston's right eye and his left eye started to puff. But the 25-year-old challenger started to get to Cuevas with left jabs and body shots of his own. But by the 6th Weston's left eye was nearly closed and Cuevas hurt him in the 7th with hard left hooks. The challenger tried to come back in the 8th but his blows did not seem to have any effect. The fight was stopped after the 9th with Weston bleeding profusely from the mouth." - United Press International

*Ringside physician Dr. Bernard Schwartz sent Weston to the hospital with a suspected broken jaw. However, it was later determined he only suffered a cut inside in the mouth and was back in the ring two months later.
