"A brisk rally in the last round tonight enabled France's Ray Famechon to retain his European featherweight championship with a 15 round decision over Roy Ankrah of the African Gold Coast. A crowd of 35,000 gave the Frenchman a big cheer when referee Andrew Smythe lifted Famechon's hand at the finish. Famechon started fast and rolled up a good lead after the first seven rounds, but Ankrah came back strong from then on and the Frenchman had to go all out to earn the edge in the last stanza." -Associated Press

*There is understandable controversy on whether or not Ankrah actually fought for Famechon's European title, as he did not appear to be a British citizen. The AP report suggests it was for the Continental title and mentions that Famechon now becomes the No. 1 contender for Sandy Saddler's world title. However, the UP reported that the bout was simply a final eliminator for the world title, but stated it was for Willie Pep's title. In actuality, Pep had lost his title to Saddler on September 8, 1950. Possibly a misprint, however, it should also be noted that both combatants weighed inside the featherweight limit.
