Hartman had an impressive amateur log, which included winning the ''German Amateur Heavyweight Championship'' in 1979. He turned pro in Miami Beach, Florida, and trained at the [[5th Street Gym]].

Hartman worked as a sparring partner for [[Muhammad Ali]], when Ali was in training for his match with [[Trevor Berbick]].

German sources list Hartman's professional boxing record as 25-6-3, with 11 knockouts. He lived in Fort Lauderdale, Florida with his wife Jaqueline and his two daughters.

Hartman worked in the sunglasses business, and seemed to be living a successful life after boxing. On April 11, 2003, Hartman committed suicide by shooting himself in Weston, Florida after separating from his wife.
