	~~He carries with him an impressive athletic résumé to go along with two degrees and eight years of service in law enforcement.~~

	Bellamy, who is the brother of NBA Hall-of-Famer Walt Bellamy, is currently undefeated as a professional boxer (10-0) and is the No. 2-ranked heavyweight in North Carolina behind current champion Donnell Holmes and top contender Calvin Brock.

	Until 1996, Bellamy, who is ranked 78th nationally, was a professional in basketball, playing overseas in countries ranging from Finland to New Zealand. He gave that up when his father, Walter Bellamy Sr., passed away in 1995.

	"Since (my family) needed me back home, I decided to sacrifice a little bit and come back home and stay around here for a while and help out," Bellamy said while taking a break from his workout. "Money's not everything -- the cause is more important sometimes."

	~~Four years ago, Bellamy first put on boxing gloves at age 35, a time when most athletes are deciding to hang them up.~~

	"It took me over a year even to get established. … It wasn't an easy experience. It took a lot of soul searching, a lot of trying, a lot of praying to do it," said the 6-foot-7-inch Bellamy. "I'm at the age where most people are saying goodbye to the sport. I know me, and what's within myself. I never would have tried it unless I had the opportunity to be successful in it. When I first began, no one gave me any hope of being successful in it."

	~~Success just seems to follow Bellamy. While he was playing basketball at UNC-Charlotte, he had the opportunity to play in the NCAA tournament and later professionally.~~

	~~And just like that, Bellamy has succeeded in the ring.~~

	~~After starting his career with four draws, the heavyweight has reeled off 10 straight victories, the last seven coming since last year when Cedric Harden became his manager.~~

	~~"We try to get him 12 (bouts) a year. We try to push him to get fights," said Harden, who lives in Greensboro. "I look for him to be 20-0 by … September."~~

	~~It's Harden's job to make sure Bellamy matches up well with the person he is going to fight, at least in the early going.~~

	"Make sure he gets the right opportunity, the right fight. Like, getting opponents that are right for him, so he's not overmatched," said Harden. "Some guys get fighters and they throw them out to the wolves."

	~~Being athletic and well-conditioned has served him well in his everyday life. Bellamy worked for two years at a jail and then served as a probation officer from 1998-2000.~~

	"I made some decisions this year that if I get the opportunity in boxing, maybe for one or two years concentrate on boxing," said Bellamy, who has degrees in criminal justice and business administration. "The people have been good to me as far as giving me the opportunity to exercise my talent, and God gave me more than one talent and I thank Him for giving me more than one talent."

	~~Bellamy has goals beyond boxing.~~

	"I always wanted to open up a barbershop, which is in the making right now, but it's no hurry," he said. "Right now, my concentration, which I'm working with (Craven County commissioner) Johnny Sampson now, is doing something with the youth services. We're in the process of doing more, and I think it's time we do something like that.

	"My ambition is to help build a youth service center. … If I put something there that gives people the opportunity, I'll be satisfied. And if I ever gain enough wealth to do that, I'll do that. I made a promise to God that I would do it, and I intend to uphold that promise."

	~~But as far as boxing is concerned, both~~ Bellamy ~~and Harden know there is still a way go before becoming a champion.~~

	~~"It's kind of hard, but we're sowing seeds right now," Harden said. "If you wait, one day you hope to get some apples on the tree.~~
