	Calimari was shot twice in the abdomen on July 29, 1937 by former policeman Walter Dandie, who said that Calimari entered his saloon at 2336 Dumain Street in New Orleans and threw soft drink bottles at him. An Orleans parish grand jury though exonerated Dandie on August 10th, after evidence was presented that Calamari had advanced on Dandie with a knife, and had engaged in a fight a few nights before at the same saloon as the fatal shooting.
