Mandell won mainly by speed and boxing ability. After losing the first two rounds because of Tony's rushes and right-hand attacks that caught him off guard, the champion calmly cuffed his rival with his long lefts and choppy rights to pile up a decisive margin. Tony had a chance only in those first two rounds, and it was the best chance any challenger ever had against Mandell, but he couldn't follow it up. Mandell's accurate left hand fired sharply and true to the challenger's face and at the final gong Tony's face was well puffed up." -Associated Press
