Whittaker cruises to TKO of Carillo
Greenberg stays perfect[http://www.miami.com/mld/miamiherald/sports/5873262.htm](Link Disabled)
BY SANTOS A. PEREZ Miami Herald Posted on Fri, May. 16, 2003
'''Charles Whittaker''' had little trouble in the '''first defense of his WBA FedCaribbean super-welterweight title''' Thursday night.
The Cayman Islands native and Miami resident '''scored a second-round TKO over Colombia's Alex Carillo''' in the main event of a
card at the '''Seville Beach Hotel on Miami Beach.'''
Late '''in the second, Whittaker dropped Carillo (15-7) with a left-right combination to the head. Although Carillo beat the'''
'''10-count, he struggled toward the ropes, forcing referee Jorge Alonso to stop the fight at 2:49 of the round.'''
Despite losing six consecutive fights by knockout prior to Thursday's bout, Carillo was given an opportunity to face
Whittaker (22-11-1, 14 KOs) for the regional title.
''We went by his previous record,'' said WBA official Calvin Inalsingh, who supervised Thursday's bout and acknowledged
Carillo's losing streak. According to Inalsingh, there is a thin pool of fighters in the Caribbean, and sometimes fighters
from neighboring areas are considered for regional title matches. ''We don't even have 10 fighters in any weight class,''
Inalsingh said. ``The Islands are a slow area to get boxers.''
In another bout, Israeli heavyweight '''Roman Greenberg scored a TKO over Tracy Williams when Williams failed to answer the'''
'''bell for the third round.'''
Greenberg (10-0, 7 KOs) outclassed Williams with lead left jabs and follow-up rights, which resulted in Williams' nose
bleeding. The punch buildup eventually forced '''Williams' cornermen to instruct referee Armando García that their fighter
'''had taken sufficient punishment.'''
Earlier, Miami Beach police officer '''Luís Corps scored a TKO over Adam Schwartz at 3:00 of the second'''-round in a super-
middleweight bout. During the second round of the Corps-Schwartz bout, there were separate interruptions of seven and 19
minutes to repair loose padding below the ring surface.
'''In other bouts: lightweight Alex Brenes won by majority decision over Javier Portilla; bantamweight Emanuel Medina won by
'''majority decision over Javier Centeno; super-featherweight Ramaz Gazashuili won by unanimous decision over Harold Lechardo.'''
