PEREZ Miami Herald Posted on Fri, May. 16, 2003<br /> &#039;&#039;&#039;Charles Whittaker&#039;&#039;&#039; had little trouble in the &#039;&#039;&#039;first defense of his WBA FedCaribbean super-welterweight title&#039;&#039;&#039; Thursday night.<br /> The Cayman Islands native and Miami resident &#039;&#039;&#039;scored a second-round TKO over Colombia&#039;s Alex Carillo&#039;&#039;&#039; in the main event of a<br /> card at the &#039;&#039;&#039;Seville Beach Hotel on Miami Beach.&#039;&#039;&#039;<br /> Late &#039;&#039;&#039;in the second, Whittaker dropped Carillo (15-7) with a left-right combination to the head. Although Carillo beat the&#039;&#039;&#039;<br /> &#039;&#039;&#039;10-count, he struggled toward the ropes, forcing referee Jorge Alonso to stop the fight at 2:49 of the round.&#039;&#039;&#039;<br /> Despite losing six consecutive fights by knockout prior to Thursday&#039;s bout, Carillo was given an opportunity to face<br /> Whittaker (22-11-1, 14 KOs) for the regional title.<br /> &#039;&#039;We went by his previous record,&#039;&#039; said WBA official Calvin Inalsingh, who supervised Thursday&#039;s bout and acknowledged<br /> Carillo&#039;s losing streak. According to Inalsingh, there is a thin pool of fighters in the Caribbean, and sometimes fighters<br /> from neighboring areas are considered for regional title matches. &#039;&#039;We don&#039;t even have 10 fighters in any weight class,&#039;&#039;<br /> Inalsingh said. ``The Islands are a slow area to get boxers.&#039;&#039;<br /> In another bout, Israeli heavyweight &#039;&#039;&#039;Roman Greenberg scored a TKO over Tracy Williams when Williams failed to answer the&#039;&#039;&#039;<br /> &#039;&#039;&#039;bell for the third round.&#039;&#039;&#039;<br /> Greenberg (10-0, 7 KOs) outclassed Williams with lead left jabs and follow-up rights, which resulted in Williams&#039; nose<br /> bleeding. The punch buildup eventually forced &#039;&#039;&#039;Williams&#039; cornermen to instruct referee Armando García that their fighter<br /> &#039;&#039;&#039;had taken sufficient punishment.&#039;&#039;&#039;<br /> Earlier, Miami Beach police officer &#039;&#039;&#039;Luís Corps scored a TKO over Adam Schwartz at 3:00 of the second&#039;&#039;&#039;-round in a super-<br /> middleweight bout.
