According to the 2011 book ''The Greatest Champion That Never Was: The Life of W. L. "Young" Stribling'' by Jacklyn Weldon White, pp. 32-33, boxing had been banned in Macon, but the rising fame and clean-cut style of local boxer Young Stribling convinced the City Council to grant the Neel American Legion Post the official boxing sponsorship. This was the first boxing program of a six-month fighting season, and occurred in the newly completed City Auditorium. The promotor was Stribling's father, Pa Stribling. Attendance was over 1,000. Tickets were $1.50, but Lanier High School students and American Legion members paid only $1.00. Ringside tickets were $2.00.
