Super bantamweight Kelsey Jeffries added yet another championship to her already impressive
resume with a 10-round unanimous decision over Lena Ramirez in the outdoor arena at Toppenish,
Washington’s Legends Casino.
Jeffries controlled the majority of the fight with her jab and fought a smart fight against what
seemed a much bigger and stronger opponent (Ramirez was two pounds over the 122-lb limit and
would not have won the title even had she won the fight).
Jeffries’ superior foot work and hand speed was the difference as she confused Ramirez for most of
the fight. The fighters were in heated exchanges in rounds 4, 5, 8 and 10, with Jeffries scoring better
behind right hand leads and left hooks. The heavy-handed Ramirez scored well with power punches
in rounds five and eight, but Jeffries was able to keep her at bay for the better part of the contest.
Final scores were 98-92 twice, and 97-93.
Super lightweight Raphael Ortiz got back on the winning track with a five-round dismantling of
rugged veteran Steve Valdez. Valdez fought well in rounds one and two, often beating the slow-
starting Ortiz to the punch behind well placed combinations.
But as the fight progressed, Ortiz picked up steam and by round five, had Valdez’s right eye closed
and was giving him a beating to the body. The doctor stopped the fight prior to the sixth round and
Ortiz collected his twelfth win, all by KO.
Oregon’s Ricky Gallegos improved to 2-0 with a second-round TKO over Matt Halverson (2-1) from
Billings, Montana. It was three left hooks to the body which deposited Halverson to the mat three
times, prompting the stoppage.
In a four rounder, Brandon Buchanon evened his record at 4-4 with a unanimous decision over
Jacob Ruffin (0-5-2). Buchanon was the busier fighter and aggressor throughout as he did what he
wanted with Ruffin. Scores were 40-36 on all cards.
The knockout of the night came as the bell sounded to end round two in the Jesse Rivas (2-2-1) vs.
Nalo Leal (4-8-1) four-rounder. The lightweights had been going toe to toe for two full rounds when
Rivas landed an overhand right which put Leal on the canvas. Leal rose to his feet, but the fight was
wisely stopped.
Sharon Gaines and Tonia Cravens put on six rounds of back-and-forth action. Cravens was always
the aggressor but Gaines was the sharper puncher and earned the split decision.
In the opener, Seattle’s Randy Gomez’s pro debut was spoiled by Ernie Marquez in a flyweight
contest as Marquez out-worked Gomez over four rounds to earn the unanimous decision
