William “Chirizo” Gonzalez (27-5, 23 KOs) shocked the local crowd on Friday night at the luxurious '''Dover Downs'''
'''Casino in Dover, Delaware''', dropping Cornelius “Lightning” Lock (22-7-2, 13 KOs) three times to capture the vacant
NABA featherweight title by seventh round knockout. In the co-feature of the seven bout card '''promoted by Champ’s'''
'''Management and Dover Downs Casino''', welterweight sensation and NABO title holder “The New” Ray Robinson (18-2, 8
KOs) showed newfound power as he battered George “El Terible” Sosa (13-8, 13 KO’s) right from the opening bell
en-route to a one sided fourth round stoppage.
The main event of the night featured action packed featherweight contest, as f'''ellow southpaws Cornelius “Lightning”'''
'''Lock and William “Chirizo” Gonzalez went to war for the vacant NABA featherweight crown.'''
Lock, fresh off an impressive one sided fourth round stoppage of former USBA title holder Rogers Mtagwa in February
in this very same Rollins Arena, looked confident in the opening round as he stepped in and out of the pocket with
single shots and buckled the knees of Gonzalez in mid-round with a counter left. Gonzales quickly recovered and
pushed forward as the round came to a close.
The heavier handed Gonzalez, with 23 knockouts in his 26 previous victories, was the aggressor and pushed the attack
by digging the body early in the second round. Lock looked to counter and punch off the clinches to keep the knockout
artist at bay, but William “Chirizo” Gonzalez was finding his mark with the heavy hooks as the round progressed. Lock
would clinch, but Gonzalez continued to punch in the in close quarters. '''Veteran Referee Steve Smoger warned Gonzalez'''
'''twice for hitting behind the head as Lock turned away in the clinches and also talked to his corner between rounds.'''
Gonzalez finished the round strong though, as he trapped Lock against the ropes and banged a six punch combination
off his guard at the bell
Lock rocked Gonzalez early '''in third round''' with a double right hand combo up top. Just when it looked like Lock would
take control, Gonzalez backed him up, with a hard right and then '''sent him to the canvas''' and almost under the ropes.
'''Lock rose to his feet and Referee Steve Smoger took a close look at him which gave Lock some extra time to get his'''
'''wits back before the bout continued.''' Gonzalez was methodical as he continued to stalk lock with heavy single shots.
Lock moved well and eventually recovered though.
'''Gonzalez again was warned for a third time for hitting behind the head early in the third.''' It would not deter Gonzalez
continued to bang away. Both combatants traded again in the center of the ring. This time he landed '''a fourth rabbit'''
'''punch behind Lock’s he by accident. Smoger stopped the action and took a point for the accidental shot behind the head'''
from Gonzalez. '''A cut was opened up just outside the right eye of Lock as the fourth round came to a close.'''
The punches of Gonzalez began to lose it steam as he tired in the fifth and Lock seemed to turn the tide as he backed
the knockout artist up with a double right hand early in the fifth. Gonzalez would not back down though and both
fighters traded as the round came to a close.
Gonzalez was still moving forward early in the sixth, but now Lock appeared to be the stronger puncher as he mixed in
good well timed shots up the middle. Lock again rocked him with a hard left. Locked stepped back and moments later
landed a hard leaping left on the button, before targeting the body with a four hooks. Just when it looked like Lock
was in complete control, Gonzalez planted him on his back in the closing seconds of the round with two devastating
lefts on the button. '''Smoger took a good look at Lock before letting him continue and it may have saved him''' as Gonzalez
couldn’t find enough time to land a finishing shot in the final ten seconds of the round.
Lock came right out of the corner in the seventh round and traded with Gonzalez in the center of the ring in an attempt
to stem the tide. It would be a big mistake though as William Gonzalez saw an opening a '''floored Lock for the third and'''
'''final time with a hard shot right down the pike. Lock landed on his back and his head bounced off the canvas.''' Referee
Steve Smoger immediately stepped in and waived the fight off without a count, giving William Gonzalez the knockout
victory '''at 32 seconds of the seventh round.'''
William Gonzalez looked jubilant as he accepted the NABA Featherweight strap, raising his record to 27-5, 24KOs).
Cornelius Lock falls to a respectable record of 22-7-2, 13KOs.
In the scheduled ten round co-feature of the evening, Philly welterweight sensation “The new” '''Ray Robinson''' (18-2,
7KOs) showed his new found power as he '''battered his way to a one sided fourth round stoppage of George “El terrible” Sosa'''
(13-8, 13KOs). Robinson was in control right from the opening bell as he befuddled Sosa with lightning quick combinations
to keep him on the outside. Sosa appeared to be heavy puncher coming in, as all of his thirteen victories had come by way
of knockout, but he was never able to show it, as Robinson controlled the second round with pinpoint shots from the
outside and good bodywork on the inside. Sosa tried to trade with Robinson as the round came to a close, as both landed
big right hands. Robinson’s hand done more damage and he stuck another one two combo just after the bell. Sosa looked
hurt as he walked to his corner. Robinson continued the onslaught and again hurt him early with a double left and also
with a big right up top. Sosa tried to bounce his way around the ring, but Robinson would not let him off the hook and
pound away with hard combinations and lethal hooks underneath, with Sosa desperately on the retreat. The one way battering
continued until the bell sounded to end the round. Sosa’s hands began to drop from the heavy bodywork of Robinson as it
continued on early '''in the fourth. Sosa could only back around the ring as Robinson rocked him with hard shots''' and
combinations. Though Sosa still looked to be unhurt, he was taking a tremendous beating. '''Referee Vic De Wysocki''' had
finally seen enough and correctly '''called a halt to the contest at 2:04 of the fourth round.'''
We were working on him setting down on his punches more in training said his well renowned trainer “Bozy” Ennis after the
fight. “Ray had been landing the combinations, but many of his punches had been arm punches. Now he is staying down more
on his shots and as I predicted, he stopped Sosa. Robinson who ups his record 18-2, 7KOs also reiterated on his new found
power. “We had been working on me stating down on my shots in camp and I listened to what my corner was saying and turned
it up after the second round. Bozy is a great trainer and it showed tonight. My bodywork was also a key in this fight. I
knew he would eventually drop his hands and it led to me stopping him.”
In an eight round special feature, undefeated super featherweight '''Omar “Super O” Douglas''' raised his record to 12-0, 9KOs,
'''dropping the taller Jesse Carradine''' (8-3-2, 4KOs) '''once in the eighth and final round on his way to a solid unanimous'''
'''decision victory.''' Douglas had a solid opponent in front of him in Jesse Carradine, who moved well, snapping good shots
from the outside throughout the middle rounds. However, the power and strength of Douglas eventually began to wear him
down and a heavy left hook sent a sprawling Carradine, who tried to hold on, to the canvas in a delayed knockdown in the
eighth and final round. Carradine was able to make it to his fight and reach the final bell, but there was no question
who would take this one, as all three judges saw the fight in the favor of Omar Douglas '''by scores of 78-73, 77-74 and a'''
'''surprising 76-75''' for the well deserve unanimous decision victory.
Undefeated cruiserweight '''Alex Guererro''' (11-0-1, 6KOs) easily '''pounded out a one sided six round unanimous decision'''
victory '''over Kamarah Pasley''' (6-7-2, 2KOs). Guererro’s power was evident, as his hard rights and combinations forced
Pasley to clinch and fight defensively throughout. Pasley was never in this one, as a'''ll three judges scored the bout'''
'''60-53 across the board''' in favor of Alex Guererro.
Lightweight '''Tyrell “Da Show Shocker” Samuels''' (15-5-1, 6KOs) shook off almost two years of ring rust as he '''nearly stopped'''
local fan favorite “Joltin” '''Joey Tiberi''' (12-2, 6KOs) in '''en-route a convincing six round unanimous decision victory.'''
Tiberi was game throughout, but Tyrell Samuels was clearly the better boxer. Late in the sixth round he rocked Tiberi
with a left hook. Tiberi backed to the ropes and was receiving serious punishment as the bell sounded to end the fight.
All three judges saw the fight in favor of Tyrell “Da Show Shocka” Samuels '''by scores of 59-55 x2 and 59-54''' for the well-
deserved unanimous decision victory.
In the opening bout of the evening, '''Frankie “The Freight Train” Filipone''' (15-4-1, 2KOs) '''out-boxed Yasin “The Assassin”'''
'''Rashid (7-6-1, 2 KOs) down the stretch to capture a close four round unanimous decision victory by scores of 39-37'''
across the board.
'''Lamont “Too Smooth” Capers''' evened his record at 3-3, as he '''out dueled slugger Earl “The Bull” Platt 4-2, 3KOs) in taking'''
''' a solid four round unanimous decision victory by scores 39-37 x 2 and 40-36 respectively.''' Platt became a crowd favorite
when he got off the canvas to knockdown David Murray (1-1) and out slug him back in February. Lamont Capers was too
smooth and would not let it happen in this one as he kept “The Bull” at bay throughout with single shots while stepping
in and out of the pocket and one two combinations. Platt had trouble cutting the ring off and only worked well in the
third when the bout went on the inside. It would cost him in this one as he could never really get off. Lamont Capers
constant shots eventually opened cuts near both of Platt’s eyes on his way to the well-deserved four round unanimous
victory '''by scores of 40-36 and 39-37 x 2 and 40-36''' respectively.
