Jennifer Han defeated Christina Ruiz Saturday night at the El Paso County Coliseum.
By Bill Knight / El Paso Times Posted: 06/28/2014 11:36:50 PM MDT
Jennifer Han took another step forward in her chase for a championship, scoring a unanimous decision
win over San Antonio's Christina Ruiz. Han, the graduate of Irvin High and UTEP, won 77-74, 77-74 and
78-73 on the judge's scorecards, improving her record to 11-3-1.
El Paso's two young up-and-coming fighters — Oscar Valenzuela and Carlos Villa — picked up quick
victories Saturday night at the El Paso County Coliseum.
Valenzuela bloodied Santa Fe's Bryan Garcia in the first round and put him out in the second round to
retain his Texas Title Belt at 135 pounds. Valenzuela improved to 7-0-1 with his fourth knockout ...
battering Garcia with lefts and rights in the opening round. Garcia went back to his corner bleeding
from his nose and mouth. It would only get worse for him.
Villa took even less time to dispose of Colbert Lozoya in their light welterweight showdown. Villa was
patient and poised, walking his opponent down, landing easily and staying out of harm's way. His
stinging left brought blood from above Loya's right eye early in the round ... a cut that would only
get worse as Villa continued to land.
Then, late in the first, Lozoya saw a casual left jab coming his way but never quite located the
thunderous right hand that left him dazed and confused on the canvas. He managed to beat the 10-count
but had that look ... the look that he was not quite sure what time zone he was in and referee Robert
Vela correctly put an end to this dance at 2:46 of round one.Villa improved to 6-1-1 while Lozoya fell
to 7-11. It was a short night at the office for both of the young fighters but they got something they
both needed — a few more notches under the experience category.
Perhaps the fight of the night was a wonderful war between Johnny Guillen and David Munoz at
featherweight. Munoz, moving well and stinging Guillen with a strong left jab, boxed well in round one
and, late in the round, dumped Guillen to the seat of his pants with a straight right hand. But Guillen
got up, made the bell. And then the war really began. Guillen was relentless, landing lefts and rights
on Munoz, chasing him around the ring. The third round was more of the same -- all action, the kind that
could have been waged in a stall in the men's room. They only needed enough room to throw punches.
The fourth was still more of the same. In the end, Guillen narrowly outpunched a game Munoz in the final
three rounds, scoring a 38-37 verdict on the scorecards of all three judges.
"If they want us to do it all over again, we'll do it again," said a smiling Guillen. "But I got the win."
Both fighters were wearing smiles and Munoz said simply, "Rematch. We want a rematch."
Jose Salinas took a unanimous decision over Esteban Villalba in a lightweight duel. But it was never easy.
Salinas improved to 5-1 and Villlalba dipped to 4-10-2. But Villalba gave the crowd a show. Salinas worked
beautifully behind his jab, showing good movement. But Villalba patiently stalked him, cutting off the ring
and landing. In the end, Salinas took the win 60-54, 59-55 and 58-56 on the scorecards but Villalba made
the statement that records are not always indicative of a fighter's skill and heart.
In the opening fight of the night, Adam Vazquez made his pro debut with a solid 40-36 unanimous decision
win over Javier Nunez, who dropped to 0-4, in a middleweight dust-up.
