Nicholson Remains Perfect With Stoppage In Baltimore
By Gary “Digital” Williams at ringside; FightNews August 24th, 2014[http://www.fightnews.com/Boxing/nicholson-remains-perfect-with-stoppage-in-baltimore-258133#more-258133]
In the main event of the Hardwork Promotions card at the Patapsco Arena in Baltimore, MD,
undefeated and highly-touted Laurel, MD middleweight prospect Demond “D’Best At It”
Nicholson saw one streak end and one continue. For the first time in his young career,
Nicholson was taken past the first and second rounds of a bout. Nicholson stopped his
previous seven opponents in the first round. However, Nicholson kept his overall stoppage
streak alive by scoring a TKO over a very tough Taneal Goyco of Philadelphia, PA at the
end of the fourth round.
The stoppage came with a bit of controversy. Late in the fourth, Nicholson dropped Goyco
with a quick right hand. As the bell sounded to end the round, Goyco walked unsteadily to
his corner, which happened to be where the ringside doctors were sitting. Chief Physician
Dr. John Stiller took a look at Goyco on his stool and immediately told referee Kenny
Chevalier to stop the bout. The Goyco corner was furious but Stiller was very adamant
about his decision. Nicholson remains perfect at 9-0, nine KO’s. Goyco is now 6-8-1,
three KO’s.

The co-feature saw Baltimore, MD cruiserweight Travis “Seveer” Reeves dominate Bryan
“Wildman” Donahue of Philadelphia en route to a six-round unanimous decision. Reeves hit
Donahue with every punch seemingly possible. However, Donahue showed his toughness by
urgent Reeves to hit him more. Reeves won by shutout on all three cards, 60-54 to raise
his record to 6-2-2, two KO’s while Donahue falls to 3-10-2.

In other bouts on the card, junior welterweight Edwin “El Matador” Reyes of Laurel, MD
won a four-round majority decision over Silver Spring, MD’s Benjamin “Wildcat” Olinga.
Reyes’s corner, led by legendary Adrian Davis, won this bout for him. Reyes moved from
side to side in the first round and allowed Olinga to come forward. Olinga was very
successful in the first. Reyes was more aggressive the rest of the way and that gave him
the edge in the bout. Reyes won by scores of 39-37 (twice). One judge had it even at 38-38.
Reyes goes the distance for the first time and is now 4-0, three KO’s. Olinga is now 1-8,
losing his third straight majority decision.

Annandale, VA heavyweight Mario “Bazooka” Flores used a crushing shot to the solar plexus
to stop Capitol Heights, MD’s Devon”Mr. 211″ Mosley at 58 seconds of the first. Flores used
Mosley’s midsection as a target from the opening bell and finally landed a right hand that
made Mosley wince and drop to the canvas. Mosley could not beat referee David Braslow’s 10
count and the bout was over. Flores is now 4-1, three KO’s while Mosley is 0-1-1.

In the opening contest, Baltimore heavyweights Lonnie Kornegay and Alando “The Future” Pugh
battled to a tough four-round majority draw. Kornegay had a 52 1/2 pound weight advantage
(270 1/2 to 222) and tried to push Pugh around. However, Pugh landed shots to the body and
got the decision on one of the scorecards. Kornegay landed enough shots to earn the draw.
Kornegay is now 1-10-3 while Pugh is 1-2-1, one KO.

A number of current and former world champions were in attendance for the card including IBF
Junior Welterweight champion Lamont Peterson, WIBA Welterweight champion Tori “Sho Nuff”
Nelson, former IBF Cruiserweight champion and current USBA Heavyweight champion Steve “U.S.S”
Cunningham, former two-time WBA Junior Welterweight champion “The Little Big Man” Sharmba
Mitchell, former three-time WBA Middleweight champion William Joppy, former IBF Junior
middleweight champion Vincent “The Ambassador” Pettway, and three-time world champion and
International Boxing Hall of Famer Mark “Too Sharp” Johnson.
Hardwork Promotions, led by active cruiserweight Venroy July, promoted the card. The
matchmaker was Brian Dillon. The ring announcer was Henry “Discombobulating” Jones.
