Super Welterweight Louis Rose (11-1-1) scored a ten round unanimous decision over Dashon Johnson (15-16-3)
Saturday night at the Emerald Queen Casino in Tacoma, WA. The fight was a late addition to the card, which
may explain why the fighters seemed to be coasting through the fight, which drew lusty boos from the crowd.
For most of the fight, Johnson covered up and moved backwards, while Rose tapped him with light punches on
the arms and gloves. Johnson occasionally would throw a wild, wide punch to remind us he was there. In the
fourth and ninth rounds, Johnson put together several flurries that won those rounds. Scores were 98-92
twice and 99-91. Fightnews scored the match 98-92.

Dennis “Superman” Hallman, a MMA fighter of some note, made his pro boxing debut at a catchweight of 180
pounds. Frankie “The Battle Goat” Orr, who is also better known in the MMA, spoiled that debut and picked
up his first win, to go to 1-1. Hallman started in conventional stance but soon abandoned that to square up
in front of his opponent. Orr is an awkward southpaw, but he stayed committed to traditional boxing footwork.
Those boxing mechanics allowed Orr to consistently land blows, while Hallman rarely threw a punch. Hallman
went into a wild flurry at the end of the fourth, making that round close. Scores were 40-36 twice and 39-37.
Fightnews had it 39-37.

Cameron Sevilla-Rivera came into his 161 pound catchweight fight on a hot streak. He had won his first four
fights as a pro, all by knockout. Dave Courchaine (2-5) did not provide the fifth straight KO. Courchaine
was tough and had a decent defense, which allowed him to last all four rounds. Sevilla-Rivera won every round
with hard, straight punching. All judges and Fightnews scored the fight 40-36 for Sevilla-Rivera.

Darryl Gardner (2-3), who had previously been one of Sevilla-Rivera’s victims, was brought in to pad the
record of previously undefeated Harrison Bevens (2-1). Gardner did not play along. Near the end of a close
first round, Gardner popped Bevens’ head up with a right uppercut, and dropped him with the follow-on left
hook. In the second, Gardner dropped Bevens again with a half-uppercut, half-right hook. In the third,
Gardner landed a straight right that drove Bevens into the ropes. Bevens didn’t go down, but was wobbly on
his feet. Gardner landed several hard punches to the head, prompting referee Joel Scobie to stop it. Time of
TKO was 1:37. The fight was at a catchweight of 161 pounds.

Lightweight prospect Jeremy McCleary remained undefeated through five fights with a unanimous decision over
Benny Vinson, who was making his debut. Vinson had good footwork and some nice defensive moves. It’s a shame
he didn’t have a few more fights to season before he met McCleary. McCleary is very poised for this point in
his career. He shows excellent balance and straight, accurate punching. McCleary dominated to a 40-36 score
on all three cards and Fightnews.

Jon Jackson picked up his second win against no losses over Taki Uluilakepa, who was making his debut at a
catchweight of 177 pounds. Uluilakepa was a lanky, awkward southpaw. Jackson did a good job of using his jab
to get inside and do body work. Uluilakepa created distance well in the third round, making that close.
Uluilakepa was deducted a point for a headbutt in the fourth. Scores were 40-35 twice and 39-36. Fightnews
had it 40-35.

The opening match, also at a catchweight of 161 pounds, may have had the most action of any bout on the card.
Cole Milani (2-1), scored a spectacular last second knockout over Zach Marti, who was making his debut.
Milani had height and reach advantages, but gave them up to slug it out in close quarters with Marti. Early
in the fight, Milani was throwing arm punches but still outworking the heavier hitting Marti, making for
close rounds. Just as the five second warning clacked in the last round of a fight that could go either way,
Milani threw a beautiful three punch combination of a right uppercut, left hook, and right cross that put
Marti completely out. Referee Joel Scobie immediately waved the fight off and called in the doctors. Time of
stoppage was 2:56 of the fourth.
The card was the 97th installment of Brian Halquist Productions’ Battle at the Boat series at the Emerald
Queen Casino I-5. The 98th Battle at the Boat will be November 15th, 2014.
