Hometown warriors '''Ronnie Austion''' and Craig Lewis scored nice wins for their fans on Friday night
at Detroit’s Masonic Temple in the feature matches on '''AG Promotions (Antonio Gates) inaugural'''
Motown presentation. In the main event, Austion '''had too much for tough Omar Avelar''' of the Lummi
Reservation in Washington '''in scoring a TKO at 1:04 of round four'''. Prior to the match Austion
had stated that he wanted to use the contest to showcase his skills for the crowd. Avelar
proved to be the perfect opponent for young Ronnie to do so. Avelar kept trying and was dead
game but lacked the speed or power to trouble 20 year old Austion. Austion was able to
demonstrate his entire offensive repertoire, scoring with hooks and jabs both to the head and
body. '''Avelar was knocked down in each of the first three rounds''', most being set up from Ronnie’s
shots to the body. '''After suffering yet another knockdown in the fourth, referee Gerard White'''
'''wisely decided that Avelar had gone through enough''' for this night. Welterweight Austion is now
(7-0, 5 KO’s) and had Anthony Dirrell and Adrien Broner in the seats cheering him on. Avelar
drops to (3-11, 2 KO’s).
Buster Douglas brought in his heavyweight '''Tim Washington''' of Toledo to test '''Craig Lewis''' in the co
main event. Lewis had a long and successful amateur career and was looking to ramp up his much
delayed pro campaign with this fight. Despite being out weighed by nearly 50 pounds, Lewis kept
to his pre fight prediction of going for the knockout as he was constantly on the attack.
Launching right after overhand right, Lewis took it to Washington from the opening bell.
Washington fought back although he seemed to tire as early as the second round. This was an
entertaining match. '''Washington was cut over the left eye in the fourth''' but was in it right to
the final bell. '''Lewis won the decision on the identical judges’ scores of 40-36''' to move up to
(2-0, 0 KO’s). Washington declines to (4-4, 4 KO’s).
'''Matchmaker Carlos Llinas''' filled out the rest of the night with 5 bouts featuring more of the
city’s young talent. Welterweight Ed Williams, with ex champ Frank Tate guiding him in his
corner, stayed unbeaten '''with a TKO 3 at :57 over Milwaukee’s Antoine Elerson'''. Elerson was
doing well for himself in the first two rounds and the fight was very close. At the start of
the third though, Elerson became suddenly passive allowing Williams to take the play away as
Elerson did little but hold. During a break in the action, '''referee White had a talk with'''
'''Elerson who then according to White, indicated that he was done. After White waved off the'''
'''fight Elerson claimed he was misunderstood'''. Unfortunate end to what was looking to be an
interesting last two rounds. Williams stays unbeaten at (7-0-1, 3 KO’s) while Elerson is now
(2-8, 2 KO’s).
Detroit '''light heavy James Ballard out toughed Villa Park, Illinois’ David Rohn''' in taking the
'''unanimous decision by tallies of 40-36 x 2 and 39-37.''' After a slow first the action picked up
in the second with a good flurry by Ballard. Rohn seemed to have some skills but just wasn’t
busy enough. When he did cut loose with some punches he was effective. Ballard is (4-0, 1 KO),
Rohn, (0-2). In a good action fight, '''Jeremy Abram of Cleveland overcame a knockdown at the end'''
'''of the third round to outlast Carlos Alcala and take the judge’s verdict by scores of 38-37 x 2'''
'''and 39-37'''. The much shorter Alcala kept coming forward using aggression to try and overcome his
disadvantage in height and reach to the much taller Abram. Abram was able to repeatedly outscore
Carlos as he charged in and kept in control of the contest save for the knockdown to go to (2-0,
1 KO). Alcala, hails from Hillside, IL and is (1-5, 0 KO’s). Featherweights.
'''Pro debuting heavyweights Jerry Waterson of Detroit and David Mbah billed from London, England'''
put on a fun back and forth battle. Mbah had the better technique and scored well early on
against full steam ahead brawler Waterson. '''Mbah bloodied Waterson’s mouth in the first, cut his'''
'''right eye in the second, and scored a knockdown''' in the same round. It was looking like a one
sided win for Mbah but Waterson was not to be denied. Both began to breath heavy from their work
at the end of the second round, however, Waterson used the opportunity to take advantage of the
slowing Mbah. '''Waterson started to land with effect in the third, finally flooring Mbah'''. Mbah was
all done in '''and referee Pat Schmidt ended it at 2:38 of the round.''' Montgomery, Alabama’s '''Dewayne'''
'''Zeigler used a scorching body attack to KO Benton Harbor’s Jose Araguz in a junior welter match'''
up. Zeigler '''scored a knockdown in the first''' although Araguz rallied well at the end of the round.
It was back to the one way action in the second round though, as '''Zeigler knocked Jose down twice'''
'''with Araguz taking the count at 1:24 after the last knockdown.''' Zeigler now (4-0-1, 4 KO’s),
Araguz is (0-5).
A cruiserweight fight between Junior Wright and Daniel Allotey was scratched when Allotey was
required to be elsewhere due to some legal matters that prohibited his appearance here.
