Saturday night in downtown '''Indianapolis, Indiana''' fight fans came out in full force as they packed '''McGowan Hall'''
for another addition of '''CBA (Ceds Boxing Academy) Promotions''' fight night. The card featured and host of local
talent and many action packed bouts.
'''Opening the card was a four round bout between Aaron Lucky and experienced veteran Vance Garvey fighting at a '''
'''catchweight of 155 pounds.''' Both men came out the gates firing as they met in the center of the ring getting
right to business. Garvey landed some nice shots early as Lucky seemed to be looking to counter more than
press the action. The rounds were close but Vance had an edge on the cards in my opinion as he seemed to land
the cleaner shots. After the last bell things went to the scorecards '''with Garvey securing the unanimous'''
'''decision win''' ending an extensive loss streak.
'''Heavyweights Brandon Bennett and Robert Mendoza''' entered the ring next with both men looking for their first
professional win. Each man came out aggressively looking to assert themselves early in the bout as they both
were able to connect from the start. Although each guy landed some power shots it is was Mendoza who seemed
to be doing the most damage. '''In round three an explosive attack by Mendoza ended the bout by way of TKO'''
giving him his first professional win.
'''Kyle Nickle and Curtis Hill, Jr. both making their professional debut collided in a four round light heavyweight'''
match. Although Nickle was game he definitely did not have the same fire power Hill, Jr. seemed to possess.
'''Curtis controlled things throughout the four rounds securing a unanimous decision win''' getting his first taste
of professional success.
'''Super featherweight Tomas Aguilera did not need much time to successfully defeat Ryan Raglin in his professional'''
'''debut.''' Tomas came out blazing going right at Raglin who seemed over whelmed by the speed and power of Tomas.
Late in round one a nice combination '''sent Raglin to the canvass''' and brought an end to his night giving Aguilera
his first knockout win.
'''Pablo Sanchez dispatched Von'Kair Stevenson in the first round of their super welterweight bout.''' This one was
done in a flash as Stevenson had no answer for Sanchez and his heavy hands.
'''Joe Hughes''' was able to remain undefeated as he '''beat Leonard Brady''' of Chicago in their '''welterweight''' battle. The
two went back in forth in a close match where neither man truly hurt the other. '''Hughes was a bit more busy''' I
think '''which helped lead him to get the majority decision win.'''
In the co main event we had aged '''heavyweights Danny Thomas and Efren Brown''' both of whom have been around the
sport of boxing for a very long time duking it out '''over six rounds'''. Although Thomas is 53 years young yes I
said 53 he was in great shape and moved pretty well. Brown and Thomas showed great heart as each man stood in
front of the other for the most part seeing who had the most juice. Thomas landed the most shots as he worked
behind his jab and used his feet to work the ring. This bout went the distance '''with Danny Thomas securing his'''
'''20th pro win by way of UD decision.'''
After the fight Thomas revealed to fans why he had chosen to step back into the ring at his age. He grabbed the
microphone and informed the crowd he was fighting for his mother whom he loss to cancer and his father who is
currently battling cancer. This was a touching story that garnered the praise of everyone in attendance and even
forced some to shed a tear.
'''The main event was a six round 163 pound catchweight contest between local favorite Keon Johnson and''' newcomer
'''Andrew Holbrook.''' This was a solid match in which Holbrook was able to over power Johnson with his brute strength
and looping left hand. Keon tried using his feet to keep the bigger Holbrook on the outside but it just did not
happen as Holbrook was able to get inside almost at will.
Holbrook landed his left hand all night, a punch which was very effective and even hurt Johnson on a couple of
occasions. As the fight wore on you could see Johnson was wearing down as he tried to fight off his opponent
even holding him in an effort to slow the relentless pressure. By the end of the fight the winner was clear in
my eyes and '''the judges felt the same awarding Holbrook the UD win.'''
