In a featured 10 round junior welterweight contest, Haskell Rhodes (23-0, 11KO) won a clear cut workmanlike unanimous
decision victory over veteran Miguel Angel Huerta (28-13-1, 18KO) on Thursday night at the Sportsman’s Lodge in Studio
City, California. Rhodes used his superior hand speed and foot speed to make it look easy against the one dimensional
Mexico City native, Huerta. Huerta chased Haskell all night long but was simply too slow and too wide with his punches
to ever make it anything closely resembling a competitive fight. Meanwhile, Haskell seemed content with a decision
victory nod never put himself in harms way by pressing the issue against Huerta. There were no knock downs in the fight
and neither fighter ever appeared hurt. Judges scored it 100-90, 99-91 and, very generously 96-94, all in favor of Haskell.
In a special eight round super welterweight contest, Wale “Lucky Boy” Omotoso (25-1, 21KO) looked impressive in knocking
out Abraham Alvarez (17-7-1, 8KO). The two exchanged well in the opening round but Alvarez went down from what appeared to
be an accidental rabbit punch and he’d stay down long enough to make one wonder if he was looking for an easy way out.
After what Omotoso did next, Alvarez probably wishes he did not continue as in the second round he was knocked down by a
left hook and after getting up, he was knocked out, courtesy of another Omotoso left hook to the chin. Time of the
knockout was 2:18 of the second round.
Former 2008 U.S. Olympian, Shawn Estrada (16-0, 14KO) returned, after a 27 month layoff, and blasted veteran Alfredo
Contreras (12-18-3, 4KO), knocking him down and out with a left hook in the fourth round. The ring rust took a few rounds
to wear off as Contreras fought pretty evenly with Estrada in the first three rounds. Estrada wasted little time in the
fourth round, however, and with a powerful left hook was able to drop Contreras hard. The referee started a count but then
correctly waved off the bout to make Estrada the TKO winner. Time of the stoppage was 0:25 in the fourth round of a
scheduled six round cruiser weight bout as they both weighed in slightly over the light heavyweight limit.
In a scheduled eight round middleweight bout, “Silky” Wilky Campfort (19-1, 10KO) put on a boxing clinic against brawler
Richard Gutierrez 28-15-1, 17KO) en route to a unanimous decision victory. Campfort lived up to his nickname as he was
smooth as silk in the ring and even when Gutierrez was throwing bombs with deadly intentions, those punches were mostly
blocked or hitting nothing but air. Meanwhile, Campfort kept piling up the points and doing what he had to do to win the
rounds without ever choosing to engage in the brawl that Gutierrez wanted. There were no knock downs in the fight. Judges
scored the bout 80-72, 79-73 and 80-72, all in favor of Campfort.
Fabian Maidana (4-0, 3KO) demolished the winless Charon Spain (0-5-1) with two knock downs in the first round. The first
knockdown was by way of a left hook and the second knockdown was just seconds later with a right cross that landed flush
on the chin. Maidana is the younger brother of former world champion, Marcos “Chino” Maidana. Time of the stoppage was
1:05 of the first round. This was the ninth bout of a scheduled 14 bouts and following the bout Spain had some problems
and had to be taken away by paramedics with no word on his condition. This also created a lengthy delay prior to the
remainder of the bouts as the other bouts could not continue until another team of paramedics could arrive. Encouragingly,
however, was that Spain was conscious and in a sitting position as he was wheeled out of the venue.
In a four round heavyweight bout, Paul Koon (7-2, 1KO) was lucky to escape with a victory over hard luck loser, Yohon
Banks (7-10-3, 5KO). Koon was knocked down in the first round but in the remaining closely contested three remaining
rounds, all three judges thought Koon did enough to win those rounds to secure the victory. All three judges saw it 38-37
in favor of Koon.
In preliminary action, a scheduled four round welterweight bout, Ryan Karl (5-0, 5KO) was too strong for Julio Quintana
(1-1) and ended things early with a barrage of punches in the second round that dropped the overwhelmed Quintana.
Possibly cognizant of the 14 bout card, the referee waved off the bout and received no protest from Quintana. Time of the
stoppage was 1:30 of the second round.
In other undercard action, Marty Barrios (7-0, 3KO) easily outboxed Juan Sandoval (7-15-1) to win a unanimous decision
victory. All three judges scored it 40-36 in favor of Barrios in the four round featherweight bout.
In opening bout action, Darwin Price (5-0, 2KO) got an easy assignment in Shawn Wate (1-6-1). It didn’t take much, just a
left hook to the body, to end things at 2:20 in the first round of a scheduled four round light welterweight bout.
“Live At The Lodge” was presented by Goosen Tutor Promotions and the venue was the Sportsmen’s Lodge in Studio City, CA.
A touching tribute in honor of the late Dan Goosen took place with video clips of Goosen’s career highlights being played
and with Goosen’s wife and children brought into the ring to receive flowers and a plaque.
