The expansive parking lot of the Golden Lion Casino in Mexicali, Mexico, was the venue for a IBF Latino lightweight
title fight presented by Tijuana former world champion Antonio Margarito’s TM Boxing and newcomer Desquer Boxing where
hometown favorite Armando “Chato” Robles (28-3-2, 15KO) had his hands full but still was able to dominate the tough as
nails Omar “Dinamita” Estrella (19-7-2, 11KO) of Tijuana, Mexico, over twelve very entertaining championship rounds.
Robles gradually has been dropping the pounds as he has fought as high as welterweight but now campaigning in the 135
pound division while Estrella, who began his career at featherweight, has fought mostly in the 130-135 pound range.
Estrella never stopped looking for the fight but Robles was just to busy, throwing an unnatural number of punches from
every angle and configuration. Robles main focus was the body as he landed hard punches to the body of Estrella while
the Tijuana fighter looked to counter. Estrella came alive in the 4th as he was able to finish up the round trapping
Robles against the ropes and going to work to the body of Robles and continued in the fifth landing the more precise
punches while displaying a better defense. Robles still came coming with a bigger punch output.
In the second half of the fight Robles began to make his straight left a factor in the fight as he began to land it
almost at will as Estrella, with his eyes beginning to swell, having trouble seeing it coming. An Estrella right hand
opened a cut over the right eye of Robles that bothered him for the remainder of the eye as he had to blink the blood
away for the remainder of the fight. A left hook in the ninth seemed to hurt Robles in the ninth and pushes him against
the ropes again and lands to the body again. That was Estrella’s last hurrah in the fight as Robles got his second wind
and put it in high gear as he just kept throwing punches, too many for Estrella to get a handle on as Robles pushed all
the way to the last bell with Estrella putting on a valiant effort. At the end, judge Fritz Werner saw it 119-109 while
Jacinto Arambula and Jesus Troncoso scored it the same with 118-100. Fighnews.com saw it a bit closer with scores of
116-112.
“Panchito” Sierra Stops “Kikin” Rios
In a super middleweight grudge match, Francisco “Panchito” Sierra (26-7-1, 23KO) forced hard-hitting Francisco “Kikin”
Rios (11-5-3, 8KO) to quit at the onset of the sixth round of a scheduled eight. The much taller Sierra of Tijuana by
way of Tepic, Mexico, inexplicably gave up his vast height advantage from the opening bell as he was content to standing
right in the pocket with Rios of Mexicali and allowing him to go to the body. Sierra did best when he would let some
distance between the two and let go of a long jab followed by a right hand through the middle.
By the second Rios began t o consistenly score with a short left hook that swelled up the cheek of Sierra. The action got
hot and heavy in the third with big punches from both with Sierra’s landing harder including a neck-snapping uppercut.
Rios went to the body and scored hard with left hooks there and to the head but Sierra scored the bigger punches as Rios
began to breathe very hard by the beginning of the fifth. Sieera went for the finish and began to score hard combinations
to Rios head but a hard left hook to the body hurt the Mexicali fighter and then he followed with a left hook up top and
dropped him. Rios beat the count but a right hand dropped him again seconds later. Rios beat the count and survived to
the end of the round but decided not come out for the sixth. Official time was ten seconds into the round.
Other Results:
Mexicali, Mexico’s Jesus “Kalaka” Navarro (22-8-1, 16KO) earned a unanimous decision over Jesus “Pirihuas” Lopez (6-13-2)
of Los Algodones, Mexico, in an eight round fight. Lopez was the aggressor as he went after the southpaw Navarro with big
punches but “Kalaka” was the better boxer as he was able to not only slip most of the attack but also counter attack with
straight punches down the middle. Navarro was deducted a point in the second for a low blow but still took the unanimous
decision with scores of 78-73 and 77-75 twice.
Tijuana’s Fernando “Ferocito” Vargas (27-8-3, 19KO) dropped southpaw Roman Melendez (5-3, 4KO) of Casas Grandes, Mexico,
twice with flush right hands, once in the third and fourth, and finally a left hook to the body was the fatal blow at the
mark of 2:22 the fourth of a scheduled six. Referee Benito Quiñones waived off the fight without a count.
Jesus “Chino” Rubio (1-0, 1KO) struggled but controlled all the action against the troublesome Leonardo Guerra (0-1) of
Mexicali, Mexico, in a super featherweight four rounder. Rubio of Los Algodones , Mexico, was the more precise and active
fighter as Guerra looked to only score long and wild punches. It was no surprise when the scores of 40-36 three times
were announced for Rubio.
In a literally rough and tumble super bantamweight four, Jonathan Corrales (2-1, 1KO) escaped with a four round split
decision over Antonio Navarro (0-1) of Mexicali. Both went down in the first bout Navarro hit Corrales of Los Algodones,
Mexico, while on the canvas and was taken a point. Both fought from pillar to post slipping over each other for the
majority of the fight. Corrales did better though and took the decision with scores of 38-37 twice while the third judge
saw it for Navarro with scores of 39-37.
Mexicali lightweight Miguel Espinoza (1-0, 1KO) did quick work of Miguel Villalobos (2-2, 2KO) of Tijuana catching him
flush with a left hook to the chin at the 2:01 of the first round of a scheduled four.
In a hard fought super bantamweight four rounder, Joel “Wenjo” Mora (1-0-2, 1KO) remained undefeated but did not win as
he was awarded a draw against the tough Juan Lopez (0-0-1) of Tijuana. Mora of Tecate, Mexico, was deducted a point for
holding in the fourth round. Scores were 39-37 for Mora, 38-37 for Lopez and an even 37-37.
