If you can not beat him, hold him.
That is what Terrence Smith did after realizing he was way over his head against a hard-hitting opponent.
Smith was disqualified in the fourth round for repeatedly holding Murat Gassiev. Time of the stoppage was 2:29.
Gassiev had his way with Smith from the beginning before an almost sellout crowd at the Quiet Cannon. Gassiev
walked Smith down through the first three rounds, while Smith tried to pick his shots.
As the bout progressed, Gassiev landed more vicious hooks to the body and uppercuts to the head of Smith. While
Gassiev pressed forward, Smith's punch output dropped.
In the fourth round, Gassiev repeatedly hurt Smith to the head and body. Midway through the round, Smith
grabbed on to Gassiev. He would not let go when referee Ray Corona ordered them to break. After repeated
warnings, Corona deducted a point from Smith. After the action resumed, Gassiev went in for the kill, landing
at will. Moments later, Smith grabbed on to Gassiev. After repeated warnings, referee Ray Corona stopped the
bout, disqualifying Smith. Originally from Russia, Gassiev goes to 20-0, 14 KOs. Smith drops to 8-18-3, 5 KOs.
Junior welterweight Eddie De La Huerta was successful in his professional debut, stopping Percy Peterson in the
second round of a scheduled six round bout. Peterson (1-6-1) got the better of De La Huerta early on, landing
right hands to the head. As the bout progressed, De La Huerta increased his aggression, landing more at will to
the head and body of Peterson. Midway through the second round, De La Huerta hurt Peterson with a right hand to
the head. De La Huerta followed up with a barrage of punches, backing Peterson up against the ropes. When
Peterson was not able to protect himself, referee David Mendoza stepped in and stopped the bout at 2:34.
Isaac Dogboe won a hard-fought six round unanimous decision over Alejandro Ochoa. Dogboe (5-0, 2 KOs) landed
the more compact and effective punches throughout the fight. Undaunted, Ochoa (5-10-2, 1 KO) was able to land
an occasional counter right to the head. But Dogboe came on in the final two rounds, sealing the win. All three
judges scored the bout in favor of Dogboe, 59-55, 59-55, and 58-56.
Cruiserweight Israel Duffus stopped Jamel Reynolds (0-4) in the first round of a scheduled four round bout.
Duffus (7-2, 6 KOs) dropped Reynolds to the canvas with a counter left hook to the head. While he got up on
wobbly legs, Reynolds was in no condition to continue, prompting referee David Mendoza to stop the bout at 2:46.
In a bout featuring junior welterweights making their pro debuts, Edgar Nava stopped Ngoc Truong in the fourth
and final round. Nava scored a knockdown in the second round, eventually hurting Truong again in the fourth.
Nava went in for the kill, prompting referee Ray Corona to stop the fight at 58 seconds.
