This card was a benefit for the United Mine Workers of America District No. 9. At least two of the participants were coal miners: referee Georgie Weyman and boxer Clem Patrick. Patrick was slightly injured in a mine accident on May 22, 1925, when some coal fell on him at the Richards Colliery in Mount Carmel, PA. In 1931, five miners were killed in an explosion at the Richards Colliery.
