I thought I had seen this episode once before, but in that version it was JD who entered the ring against the Duke, not Hoss. At the end of that episode, while JD was again getting pulverized, Ben Cartwright argued with Marge to convince JD to quit the bout. Which she did do, eventually. That ending differs drastically from the episode described here, which is an accurate description.
