Former British lightweight champion [[Dick Burge]] started The Ring in 1910, as a venue that would provide top-class boxing at prices the working class public could afford. Its heyday was undoubtedly the 1910s and 20s. By the 30s national industrial depression, coupled with the opening of dog tracks, and the attraction of larger, more comfortable boxing arenas in London had caused its decline. The building was destroyed in 1942, after receiving two direct hits from the German Luftwaffe.
