BERKLEY – Anthony Gouvia, husband of the late Beatrice (Araujo) Gouvia, died at Brockton Hospital on Oct. 1, 2009.
A resident of Berkley for many years, he was 90 years old.
Born in New Bedford, he was the son of the late Cyril and Christina (Mendes) Gouvia.
Educated in Berkley and Taunton schools, he later worked for the former Geilech Tannery for over 20 years, before retiring many years ago.
An Army Veteran of WWII, Mr. Gouvia served with the 6th Division under General Patton, and saw action in Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, and the Ardennes.
He enjoyed boxing, and fought in and around the Taunton area before, and after the war, and while in the Army.
He leaves two sons, Robert A. Gouvia and his wife Brenda of E. Taunton, and David A. Gouvia and his wife Joyce E. of Dighton; a brother, Joseph Gouveia and his wife Nancy of Berkley; a sister, Maria Fontes of Berkley; 5 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
He was also the brother of the late Alfred Gouveia, Manuel Gouvia, and Cora Danise.
Committal Services with Military Honors will be held at the MA National VA Cemetery, Bourne on Tuesday, Oct. 6th at 3 p.m.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend.
Calling Hours are respectfully omitted.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, 311 Arsenal St. Watertown, MA 02472.
Arrangements are by the Silva Funeral Home, 80 Broadway, Taunton
