	Once touted as the next big thing, Dominick Guinn had the expectations of a nation weighing heavily on his shoulders. The American heavyweight blitzed his way to 24 straight victories, carving a reputation and the best prospect in the heavyweight division.

	~~Guinn knocked out fellow heavyweight prospect Michael Grant in an exciting punch up in 2003, and looked set to take on the big guns in the division.~~

	~~He followed up with some more good wins, and then ran into perennial underachiever Monte Barrett. Guinn looked flat and bored during the fight, and could not seem to let his hands go.~~

	The former amateur stand out wrote it off as a bad day in the office, and promised to get back to his previous form in his next fight. Guinn quickly knocked out a used up Phil Jackson, then went into a tough bout with Sergui Lyakhovic. Guinn was again out pointed in a fight he probably could have won, showing little inclination to put his foot on the pedal and force the action.

	~~Next up was the limited Nigerian, Friday Ahunanya. Guinn could only manage a draw, again looking flat and uninspired.~~

	By now Guinn had been written off by the boxing public, and relegated to 'fringe contender' status. Luckily, however, James Toney was in need of a name opponent to keep himself busy (after being stripped of his title against John Ruiz).

	~~Guinn jumped at the chance, and got himself into fantastic shape, hoping to shock Toney and the boxing world into believing in him once more. His trainer Joe Goossen said:~~

	Well, Toney wasn't in shape, but it was 'the fat man' that ran away with the fight, not Guinn. 'The Southern Disaster' actually had pockets of success when he stayed on the outside, but inexplicably chose to fight in close. This of course, delighted Toney, who pot shotted the younger man at will. However, Guinn had shown flashes of motivation, and he had at least tried to win against to wily veteran.

	Guinn then rebounded with a solid win against former hot prospect Audley Harrison in a crossroads fight for both men. Harrison was coming off a terrible effort against fellow Brit Danny Williams, and was hoping to prove his doubters wrong by beating a named opponent. While Guinn did not look spectacular, he thoroughly out pointed the nervous looking Harrison, and has now brought himself back into the picture on the heavyweight landscape.

	On Wednesday, Guinn takes on the largely unknown Tony Thompson (27-1) to build on his recent win. The 6ft 5 Southpaw is a decent boxer, but has not faced anyone particularly dangerous. His resume is littered with fighters with more losses than wins on their records, and there is nothing to suggest he has the makings of a world-beater.

	Los Angeles – When Silver Spring, MD native Tony “The Tiger” Thompson fought his first professional fight at the advanced age of 28, he could only imagine what it would be like to be among the top ranked heavyweight boxers in the world.

	After disarming and dismantling highly regarded heavyweight Dominick Guinn with a dominant performance a week ago on ESPN2’s “Wednesday Night Fights,” the now-34 year old veteran (28-1, 17 KOs) needn’t wonder anymore.

	“Tony has taken a wild ride toward earning a world title shot – ‘more like a rollercoaster’ – declared his promoter, Dan Goossen. “Going in the underdog to the resurgent Guinn, he trained hard and fought a near perfect fight while establishing himself as a real threat in the heavyweight division. What he accomplished was getting the message out to the world heavyweight champions that there is another big, strong, and hungry heavyweight out there that isn’t European – made in America from head to toe!”

	Co-managed by NBA All-Star Steve Francis of the New York Knicks and Nate Peake, the towering 6-foot-6 inch, 238 lb. southpaw utilized his 81.5-inch reach in following the fight plan of co-trainers Tom Browner and Barry Hunter to a tee en route to a one-sided, 12-round unanimous decision at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, CA to capture the vacant WBC Continental Americas and NABO heavyweight titles.

	Thompson, constantly moving to his right, had Guinn retreating for most of the night, piling up points as he continually landed his sharp right jab. Defensively, he kept his opponent at a distance by making full use of his long reach advantage, which completely frustrated Guinn and took the fight right out of him.

	~~Thompson has now rattled off a streak of 24 consecutive wins and should expect to see his rankings jump up to be considered one of the top five heavyweights in the world.~~

	In the meantime, Goossen and “Team Tiger” plan on pursuing any of the world titleholders – Hasim Rahman (WBC), Wladimir Klitschko (IBF) Nikolay Valuev (WBA) and Sergei Lyakhovich (WBO) – to get a world championship belt as soon as possible.

	“I told Dan (Goossen) back in March that I was ready to make my move, and when the Guinn fight was offered I knew that beating him alone wasn’t good enough, I needed to make a statement to the fans and networks and I believe they got my message; I will not be denied,” Thompson said. “I’m 34, and just coming into my prime years.
