			Durham was a native of Camden, New Jersey.

			His short amateur career as a middleweight ended in England during Word War II. During an air raid scramble, a jeep ran over his legs. Both legs were broken, and he spent much of the next two years in hospitals.

			Durham worked as a welder for the Pennsylvania Railroad, later the Penn Central Transportation Company, while training boxers at night.

			He learned much of his skills from veteran trainer Jimmy Wilson.

			He met his most famous client, Joe Frazier, at a Police Athletic League gym in 1961.

			Durham suffered a stroke at his home in Philadelphia on August 28, 1973. He died two days later at the age of 52. He was survived by his widow and four children.
