Chavez was strong in the early going, with McCoy at his best in the middle rounds, particularly the 5th round. McCoy faded badly in the 8th and 9th rounds, allowing Chavez to take the lead. McCoy closed with a strong rally in the final round though which won him the decision. The ''Mercury Herald'' had Chavez winning by three points, the ''Evening News'' had Chavez by one point.
