Carlos Ortiz 135 lbs beat Flash Elorde 135 lbs by TKO at 1:44 in round 14 of 15

"Carlos Ortiz defended his world lightweight title by stopping Flash Elorde of the Philippines on a 14th round TKO Saturday night, an ending that came as a surprise to the 60,000 fans at the outdoor Rizal football stadium. The Puerto Rican born Ortiz had battered Elorde with hard lefts and rights against the ropes just before the referee stopped it. Although Ortiz was cut over the right eye in the 2nd and the gash was opened again in the 7th and 8th, he maintained a steady pace. The champ scored with his stinging left jab and landed a series of smashing right uppercuts in the 5th but was unable to stagger the Filipino. Elorde began to slow down in the 9th but rallied in the 13th. Ortiz came out strong in the 14th and drove Elorde to the ropes. The challenger was still fighting back when referee James Wilson stopped it." -Associated Press

Post fight comments

  • "For the love of God, the fight should have continued. I don't deny he hit me good in the 14th, but I was not ready to go down yet. I waited 5-6 years for a crack at the lightweight title. This should not have happened the way it did Saturday." -Flash Elorde
  • "The referee probably thought it best not to subject Elorde to further punishment. Almost everyone, at ringside at least, agreed Elorde was getting a beating." -Justiniano Montano, Jr., Chairman of the Philippines' Games and Amusements Board and VP of the WBA.
