Carmelo Costa won two New York Golden Gloves Championships: the 1951 118lb Sub-Novice Championship and the 1952 126lb Open Division Championship. In 1951 Costa defeated Mario DeJesus in the finals to win the Championship, and in 1952 Costa vs. Harry Smith of the CYO in the finals to win the Championship. Costa trained at the Police Athletic League.
In 1952 representing New York, Costa won an Intercity Golden Gloves title in the featherweight division vs. Adell Dukes.
