Vasquez represented the United States as a flyweight at the 1968 Mexico City Olympic games. Vasquez won three New York Golden Gloves Championships. . After winning the 118lb Open Championship in 1967, Vasquez won both the 1968 and 1969 112lb Open Championships. Vasquez trained at the New York City Recreation Departments St.Mary's Center in the South Bronx.
