On December 5, 1986, Thomas won the vacant WBC light middleweight title via a 3rd round TKO over John "The Beast" Mugabi at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas. Thomas would lose the title eight months later, in Merignac, France, by way of a 12 round unanimous decision to Lupe Aquino.
On January 3, 1988, Thomas fell short in his attempt to regain the title, suffering a 7th round TKO loss in Italy, at the hands of the new champ, Gianfranco Rosi.
He was shot to death in front of an East Detroit party store over a minor drug dispute.
