- Akinwande vacated the WBO belt on January 29, 1997 to challenge Lewis for the WBC title and was elevated to the No.1 spot in the WBC rankings released late February.
- Originally set to take place in Atlantic City, it was relocated on May 13 because Don King was barred from doing business in New Jersey, due to his indictment for wire fraud in 1994.
- The fight was televised live on HBO.
- There was a crowd of about 2,000 in the Caesars Tahoe ballroom.
- Akinwande was disqualified in round five for excessive holding.
- Lewis landed 87 of 174 punches, while Akinwande connected on only 30 of 107 punches.
