Onsite Fight Poster
  • Bout announced on July 23.[1]
  • Lewis was guaranteed $4 million and Golota $1.75 million.
  • Lewis was a 6-5 favorite.
  • There was a crowd of 13,889 at the Atlantic City Convention Center.
  • The fight was televised live on pay-per-view by TVKO, HBO's pay-per-view company. It generated about 300,000 buys.
  • Richard Hoffer of Sports Illustrated reported:
Lewis forced his foe into a neutral corner and in a series of eight punches, beginning with a tremendous overhand right, drove Golota to the canvas. Golota sprang back up, grimacing as if fighting for air, and immediately lurched across the ring toward Lewis until the referee stopped him and gave him a very generous eight count. Then Lewis maneuvered Golota into another corner and pounded him down to the canvas again, with Golota going into a crouch and then crumpling to the floor.
  • About 15 minutes after the fight, Golota collapsed in his locker room and was taken by ambulance to the Atlantic City Medical Center. Hospital officials said Golota had a seizure in the locker room, during which he stopped breathing and had no pulse for about half a minute. He was revived by cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
  • Golota secretly received an injection of the painkiller lidocaine in his right knee an hour and a half before the fight. Golota was fined $5,000 by the New Jersey State Athletic Control Board, which prohibits the use of all drugs and alcohol before or during a match. Boxers taking medication prescribed by a physician must report it.
  • Golota filed a $21 million lawsuit against the doctor who injected him with lidocaine. The case was settled out of court for around $1 million.
  • On the undercard, IBF junior lightweight champion Arturo Gatti stopped Gabriel Ruelas in five rounds. Gatti vs. Ruelas would be named Fight of the Year and Knockout of the Year by The Ring.
