Mayweather shows he's ready for a title shot
BILOXI, Miss. (AP) — Floyd Mayweather showed quickness and power as he used a flurry of punches to knock out veteran Hector Arroyo with 1:21 to go in the fifth round of a scheduled 10-round featherweight fight Friday night at the Biloxi Grand Casino.
Mayweather, 20, a former Olympian, dominated from the opening bell and two seconds before the end of the fourth round caught Arroyo with a straight right hand that dropped him to the canvas.
"I don't want to rush it, but I feel I'm ready to face a world champion or a top contender," Mayweather said. "It's obvious that I'm getting close. I want to be a world champion as quickly as possible."
Mayweather used his left jab to keep Arroyo (16-5-1) at bay and the right hand to hurt the veteran.
Mayweather opened the fifth round with a couple of flurries that sent Arroyo reeling to the canvas and the referee stopped the bout.
Mayweather, 13-0 with 11 knockouts, may be headed to a bout against Genaro Hernandez, the WBC super featherweight champion.
"The WBC is the biggest belt out there," Mayweather said. "I want to fight for their title. It would mean a lot to be a WBC champion.
"Me and Genaro have the same promoter in Top Rank's Bob Arum. He's old and will be out of the sport soon. I'm a young, up-and-coming fighter. I need to get a shot at him and that title."
