As with their previous meeting, Gomes appeared headed for victory going into the 9th round. In the 9th round, Tibbs hurt Gomes with a right hand, and then after chasing him down, floored him with the same blow. Gomes rose in bad shape, and was floored again with two more right hands, He rose for a second time, but appeared dazed along the ropes, and the bout was stopped.
