In front of 8,680 spectators at the War Memorial and a national TV- audience, nr.1 Welterweight contender Carmen Basilio outpointed the strong German middleweight Peter Mueller over 10 rounds. Both men went for body blows, gradually shifted to headblows with near fatal results: Both were severly cut on the eyebrows in the 7th,but referee Harry Kessler let the fight go on. In the last two rounds Basilio scored with countless hard left hooks.
Score: Harold Barnes 8-1-1, Jack Kimball 6-4, Harry Kessler 7-2, all in favor of Basilio.
