"Floyd Patterson survived a heavy body bombing by George Chuvalo of Toronto and moved a giant step towards a third term as heavyweight champion Monday night by whipping the husky Canadian on a unanimous decision in 12 rounds before a SRO crowd of 19,100 at MSG. Patterson, fighting desperately, punished Chuvalo with his quick punches to the head but couldn't bring him down. The body-punching Chuvalo kept slamming away at the ex-champ's spare ribs all through the furiously waged fight. Time after time Patterson raked Chuvalo's head with crashing left hooks and leaping right hands, but Chuvalo kept moving ever onward. The Canadian banged away at the body constantly, seldom bothering to go to the head. When he did land on Patterson's jaw, he found none of the china that had tinkled in so many previous fights. Chuvalo had a red mark under his right eye as early as the 3rd and a slight cut around the left eye in the 9th. There were no knockdowns." -Associated Press
- Patterson claimed after the bout that he had injured his left hand in San Juan, Puerto Rico while training for his Dec. 13th match with Charley Powell, by hitting the steel swivel on the speed bag. He stated he spent time in the hospital there registered under his brother Ray's name. He also stated he reinjured the hand while training for Chuvalo in Marlboro, NY, by hitting the elbow of a sparring partner. He stated, "I decided to go through with this fight because of the postponement of the Clay-Liston return bout. Another postponement would be a blow to boxing."

Post-fight comment
- "It was when I was most aggressive that I got hit by those stinging punches. His punches in the clinches were so powerful I had to change my style and start boxing. This is the best I fought. I did the best I know how." -Floyd Patterson
