  • Former amateur champion Abraham Nova won the first round on technical skill, but then got into trouble against lightweight opponent Wilfredo Garriga of Puerto Rico in the second round. Nova decked Garriga in the third round, who was in trouble and saved by the bell. Garriga staggered Nova around the ring in the fourth round to win it. The turning point in the close bout came from Nova's corner. Nova was not moving his head during the first four rounds. Nova emerged in the fifth round with better head and body movement, scored with jabs well and clearly won the close bout outright. Good match up. Scoring appeared fair.
  • Exercising safety protocols, the NYSAC physician examined Garriga carefully before the start of round four for 30 seconds, enabling additional recovery time. Garriga's eyes were good and he responded to questioning fine, so he got another chance.
