"Florentino Fernandez of Cuba outpointed Gaspar Ortega of Mexico in a thriller at MSG Friday night for his 22nd straight professional victory. Unbeaten Fernandez was the aggressor in every round with his left-hooking attack; but he was hard-pressed to win because of Ortega's countering attacks and surprising power in the many exchanges. And the Cuban had to be content with a split 10 round decision. Ortega was bleeding from his nose and mouth at the finish. Fernandez bled from the mouth and from a cut under his right eye." -United Press International

• MSG matchmaker Teddy Brenner claimed to have an agreement from welterweight champion Don Jordan for a Jan. 22, 1960 non-title fight with the winner of this match. Moreover, Brenner stated he now wished to make the bout with the title at stake. Neither fight materialized.
