"Cuban Florentino Fernandez handed hard-punching Jose Torres his first defeat in 28 professional bouts by stopping the New York middleweight in the 5th round tonight before an estimated 15,000 at Hiram Bithorn Stadium. The bout was stopped at 2:07 of the 5th after Fernandez had floored Torres for the second time earlier in the session. Torres, who also was decked in the 2nd round, was in no condition to continue when the referee intervened. Fernandez had cornered Torres on the ropes and was hammering him with both hands. It was a bloody fight while it lasted. Fernandez bled freely from a deep cut inside his mouth after the 2nd round. The Cuban also had a small cut on his nose. Torres bled from cuts on his nose and on his left brow." -United Press International
