Rivero used a two-handed body attack that forced Fernandez to clinch. Rivero's best round was the third, as he had Fernandez hanging on with his body attack. Fernandez for his part, landed his left hook, which was unable to hurt Rivero. Fernandez was knocked down by a left hook at the end of the 8th round. He was up quickly, protesting that he had not been floored by a punch, though referee Colan issued the mandatory eight-count.
Rivero finished the bout with his right eye swollen shut.
