"Gabriel (Flash) Elorde of the Philippines won the world junior lightweight title last night by knocking out Harold Gomes, the defending champion from Providence, R.I., in the 7th round of a scheduled 15 round bout. Gomes was a 2-1 favorite but Elorde dominated the fight from the opening bell. He floored Gomes five times before knocking him out at 1:50 of the 7th round. Elorde pulled one of the biggest upsets in Asian ring history when referee Barney Ross, former lightweight and welterweight champion, counted out the U.S. boxer. The sellout crowd of 26,000 kept up a steady roar and Elorde knelt in his corner while Ross counted 10 over the prostrate and bleeding Gomes." -United Press International
- Gomes' contract guaranteed him $25,000 plus a return bout within 60 days.
