Eddie Andrews, an unheralded ex-Golden Gloves middleweight from Lowell, Mass., made his New York mark in a hurry last night when he kayoed the 2-1 favorite, Tex Gonzalez, South Orange, N.J., in 1:41 of the first round at St. Nick’s. Andrews used a short right to the button to do the job. Gonzalez sunk to his knees and grabbed the New Englander around the legs. Andrews couldn’t get to the neutral corner ref Harry Ebbets was waving him to because of the grip Gonzalez had. By the time he wiggled out of Tex’ clutches, the count had reached seven. Gonzalez just failed to get up. Ebbets tolled ten and it was over. Andrews had had the better of it while it lasted. He connected with both hands to the body and a stiff hook to the head. He waited for the correct spot for the right, and when he found it, Gonzalez was tagged with his eighth setback in 32 scraps. Andrews weighed 158 ½ to Gonzalez’ 159. (New York Daily News)
