HOUSTON -- Juan Diaz had little trouble defending his WBA lightweight title Friday night, stopping Billy Irwin at 1:27 in the ninth round of a lopsided fight.

In another undercard bout, emerging heavyweight Calvin Brock stayed undefeated by twice dropping Clifford Etienne with left hooks in the third round. The referee ended the fight as Etienne struggled to his feet following his third knockdown of the match, with 1:25 left in the third.
"He kept talking about me, wanting to get at me," said Brock (24-0), a 2000 U.S. Olympic super heavyweight. "I showed I was strong, and I showed I can get down the nitty-gritty."
Etienne, perhaps best known for being Mike Tyson's last knockout victim, had angered Brock at a news conference two days earlier when he went on a rambling diatribe about being disrespected.
Etienne, nicknamed "The Black Rhino", was still talking trash once the fight was over.
"The ref stopped the fight too soon. It was a premature stoppage," Etienne said. "I could have bullied him a little bit more early but you just have to take what comes. I know I had a lot left."[1]
