"Tony DeMarco reigns as the new world welterweight king today after turning determination, skill and a devastating punch into a 14th round TKO over champion Johnny Saxton. DeMarco, from Boston's north end, knocked Saxton down for a nine-count and hammered the helpless New Yorker against the ropes before referee Mel Manning stopped it at 2:20 of the 14th round last night at Boston Garden. DeMarco was cut, however, over the left eye in the 2nd round when Saxton connected with a right cross. DeMarco's seconds, however, did such a good job that it was never reopened." -Associated Press
