The World Boxing Union V, which is based in Germany, is not the original World Boxing Union, which was founded in the United Kingdom in 1995 and ceased operating in 2009. There is also another World Boxing Union, which was formed in 2011 and is based in the United States. Initially, Jones was supposed fight Bobby Gunn on December 4 in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania for the cruiserweight title of the U.S.-based WBU, but when finalizing the deal dragged on, Jones agreed to fight Benmakhlouf in Russia for the WBU V title.
- The fight was billed as a "Winner Takes All" match, with the winner receiving the entire purse.
- Benmakhlouf took a knee after Jones wobbled him with a left hook early in the third round.
