Carlos Ortiz 137 lbs beat Arthur Persley 136 lbs by UD in round 10 of 10

"World lightweight champion Carlos Ortiz hammered out a unanimous decision over aging but sturdy Arthur Persley Wednesday night in their 10 round non-title match before 30,000 fans at the huge Araneta Coliseum. There were no knockdowns although both fighters went all-out slugging each other throughout their bruising match. While Ortiz rocked his 39 year old opponent several times during the match with lightning swift left jabs and punishing body blows, he appeared in the end to have suffered the most. He had a cut below his right eye and also showed a swollen left eye from the effects of Persley's counter-punches. Except for the 3rd and 6th rounds and the 2nd, 4th and 5th rounds, which were even, Ortiz dominated the fight. He repeatedly caught Persley with rapid fire left jabs and damaging body punches during the infighting." -United Press International

  • Filipino fans protested the decision in Ortiz' favor and actually started small fires within the arena due to adopting Persley as a hometown fighter since he had relocated to the Philippines.
